Under Spanish rule for 333 years and U.S. guardianship for 48 years, the Philippines has many cultural links with the West. After a decade of authoritarian rule under Pres. Marcos in 1986, the People Power movement led a bloodless uprising against the regime. With the Marcos’s exiled, restoration of a democratic government was restored. Poverty, terrorism, overcrowding and tension with China over disputed territory in the South China Sea, are just some of the issues to be addressed.
