After 4 years of conflict, sovereignty from the Dutch was transferred in 1949. Authoritarian presidents Soekarno and Suharto ruled Indonesia for 50 years, until free and fair elections in 1999, made Indonesia one of the world’s largest democracies, and the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. Indonesia faces several issues such as implementing economic and financial reforms, stemming corruption, alleviating poverty, improving education, preventing terrorism and consolidating democracy.
