In 1965, White Prime Minister Ian Smith declared its independence from the UK. Zimbabwe was born in 1980 under the rule of Robert Mugabe, who tortured and killed thousands of civilians in a crackdown on dissents. Economic mismanagement and chaotic land redistribution crippled the economy resulting in widespread shortages. In 2018, Mnangagwa won the presidential election and has resorted violent disruption of protests and opposition rallies. Economic conditions are in steep decline with inflation soaring, broken infrastructure and food shortages.
