Project Timeline

Overview

This project provides a feeding program for four not-for-profit organisations working with children who are at extreme risk. By improving their nutrition, the health of the children improves, they can concentrate on their lessons and are better equipped for the future. We have funded this project for several years and have seen the impact this program has in helping needy children. This two-year project will enable our partner to continue its feeding program until it becomes sustainable and profitable.

Why support this

There are many street children in Phnom Penh who are vulnerable to trafficking and sexual exploitation. Our local partners look after children in three different locations and currently supply over 600 children a week with enriched food sources (thanks to this project), safe play spaces, counseling, and where possible, rescue from terrible situations. This nutrient enriched feeding program is a social enterprise run by a NZ businessman. He is providing work for 35 local people who receive training to run a production facility. They manufacture quality vitamin enriched soy products and run a spirulina farm. With a sustainable supply of quality food, the children will develop improved immune systems, better neurological development and have less eye problems (caused by a lack of nutrition).

Budget

The budget is $50,000 per year for two years This provides soy products to 210 children five days a week and 330 children weekly.

Objectives Include

  • An entire generation is missing in Cambodia due to the 3 million adults and children killed by Pol Pot in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
  • Dysfunctional families and many orphans are the legacy.
  • Providing food, housing, education and genuine care for children is a huge need in this nation.
  • There are many children either living on the street, or who are at risk of human trafficking and abuse.
  • Their family situation provides less than adequate care and supervision, they do not often attend school, nor do they receive adequate shelter, clothes or food.
  • These are the children our partners are working with, trying to help them before the situation becomes worse.

Expected Life Change

  • Healthy children are given love and attention weekly, in a safe and caring environment.
  • 35 Cambodians are employed and given quality training in production and good business practices, as they manufacture the health food products.
  • Minimise the risk of serious long-term medical problems and maximises educational possibilities.
