This education program serves remote agricultural communities in Uttarakhand, Northern India. Villagers here rely on farming and small trades and have limited access to healthcare and infrastructure. Local families are very poor which usually means that children do not receive an education. The aim of this project is to ensure that children in these villages have access to quality education, providing them a pathway out of poverty, as well as having a positive impact on the entire community. Entrust will support four established schools to provide education for the 267 students currently enrolled.
Why support this
Limited government schooling in remote villages of Uttarakhand, coupled with inconsistent teacher attendance, has led to low literacy rates, especially among girls. Many parents prefer English-medium education for better job prospects and to prevent child labour. Migration from the hilly region is driven by lack of employment, education, and healthcare. Children with disabilities are often excluded due to inadequate resources in government schools. Establishing inclusive, high-quality English-medium schools is vital for providing new learning opportunities, and upgrading existing schools is crucial to supporting students progressing to higher grades.
