Education has the power to change people’s lives. The knowledge that is gained can be used to shape futures and educate generations to come. It is a key that unlocks the door of opportunity. As COVID-19 continued to disrupt the world, school closures fuelled big learning losses, especially for the disadvantaged. Almost 1.6 billion students across the world were affected by the pandemic. The harmful effects of the pandemic are not distributed equally as poor children in already disadvantaged or vulnerable situations are the most severely affected. School children around the world have lost an estimated 1.8 trillion hours of in-person learning due to COVID-19. Young and adult learners have been cut off from their education and the other vital benefits schools provide. (Source UNICEF 2022)
There are still 781 million illiterate adults and nearly two-thirds of these are women. (Source UNESCO 2022)
