Part of French Indochina, communist Pathet Lao took control of the government in 1975, instituting a socialist regime aligned to Vietnam. A limited return to private enterprise and the liberalization of foreign investment laws began in 1988. In recent years foreign investment has grown in the natural resource and industry sectors. Laos remains communist maintaining close ties with Vietnam and China, who continue to exert substantial political and economic influence.
