Bangladesh won independence from India in 1971. Overthrown by a military coup in 1975, democratic rule commenced again in 2008. With the help of international development, Bangladesh has reduced the poverty rate from over half of the population to less than a third, improved maternal and child health, and made great progress in food security since independence. The economy is growing at 6% a year.
